April Is National Volunteer Month: Celebrating Those Who Give Their Time

Honoring the volunteers who make Meals on Wheels of Pasco County possible

April 1, 2026  •  4 min read

Every April, National Volunteer Month honors the millions of people who donate their time, talents, and energy to causes that strengthen our communities. Here at Meals on Wheels of Pasco County, we know firsthand just how essential volunteers are — because without them, the meals simply wouldn’t get delivered and our neighbors in need would go without.

In the United States, volunteerism is instilled at a young age. It is woven into after-school programs, summer activities, and community organizations. From rural fire departments to food banks, from mentoring programs to crisis hotlines — most organizations in communities large and small simply would not function without dedicated volunteers stepping up.

📜 A Brief History

The roots of this observance trace back to 1943, when Canada first celebrated National Volunteer Week to honor the contributions of women on the Home Front during World War II. The tradition came to the United States in 1974, when President Richard Nixon urged all Americans to seek out volunteer opportunities and honor those who give their time for the betterment of communities.

In 1991, President George H.W. Bush launched the “Points of Light” campaign and established April as National Volunteer Month. The observance was recognized worldwide beginning in 1990 and has continued to grow every year since.

💙 Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers fill gaps that would otherwise go unmet. They staff rural fire and ambulance departments, keep food banks and soup kitchens open, provide shelter and medical care to the underserved, and offer comforting words during times of crisis. In many families, the spirit of volunteerism is passed down from one generation to the next, creating a lasting culture of service.

Studies show that 96% of volunteers report that giving their time makes them happier — proof that service benefits the giver just as much as the receiver.

🍞 Our Volunteers Make the Difference

Whether it’s a few hours a week or a regular commitment, every single effort helps ensure that homebound seniors and neighbors in need receive nutritious meals and a moment of human connection.

To all of our incredible volunteers: THANK YOU. You are the reason we can continue this vital mission in Pasco County.
